Media Industries Glossary-

  • Audience- This is a gathering of spectators or listeners, usually at a public performance such as a concert, but also refers to any member of the public viewing, buying or listening to any type of media product.
  • Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) - A company that makes sure all advertising meets high eco advertising standards regulatory body.
  • Broadcasters Audience Research Board (BARB) - Is a service that provides information of audience levels watching t.v although this can only be an estimated figure.
  • British Board Of Film Classification (BBFC) - This is the organisation set up to legally classify age ratings on video games and DVD's ect.
  • Institution- An organisation that invests chiefly in financial assets such as loans and securities rather than in tangable assets. Financial institutions include banks, trust companies and savings ect.
  • New Media Industry- Describes when digital computerised or networked information and communication technologies emerged together in the later part of the 20th century.
  • Narrowcasting- When a certain channel choose a certain audience through the programme they broadcast.
  • National Readership Survey (NRS)- These are the people who are reading magazines and newspapers.
  • Office Of Communications- The independant regulatory body for large communication companies in the UK.
  • Press Complaints COmission (PCC) - The regulatory body for the UK newspapers and magazines.
  • Broadcasting- Is sending information over networks from one source to another.
  • Company size: Major companies- The profit wouldn't exceed 11 million, there turnover shouldn't exceed 22 million.
  • Independant- A company thats solely run by itself.
  • Cross Media companies- Draws viewers of TV, press to start using the web and mobiles more.
  • Horizontal Integration- Horizontal intergration is when a company owns once or more building or firm.
  • Private Ownership- Owned by 1 person or a small group. Editional content isn't controlled by thousands of share holders.
  • Public Ownership- Owned by share holders- the directors have to answer to there share holders.
  • Public Service Broadcasting- Is a broadcasting organisation made financially and controlled by the public for the public and has no political interferance.
  • Regulatory Body- Is an independant organisation that was established and that regulates the activities of companies in an industry.
  • Self Regulatory Body- Organisation which exercises regulatory authority over an industry or profession.
  • Vertical Intergration- Process of several step in production and for distribution of a product or service by a single company or entity in order to increase the companies power in the market place.

Logo Ideas!


My contirbution.

My contribution to the first issue of New is looking at the latest hair styles for people going out clubbing ect over the next few months.
As it's only head shots needed I would be able to shoot the pictures on the short backdrop. I'm hoping that Bonnie && Lucinda will model for me, I just need to find a Guy that would like to model a hairstyle for me (:

Research :)

The Editorial Research Manager reports to the Head of Design & Editorial and has accountability for managing the editorial and factual content of all stamp products. Additionally they must ensure the resolution of all intellectual property issues in relation to the creative development of the entire philatelic and collectibles range.

News Editor
News contributors promote TLDP's public image.
Responsibilities
Select appropriate news items to be included in TLDP's newsletter.
Fact check news items.
Markup items according to DocBook template for TLDP news.
Commit new information to CVS.
Publish news via the web and RSS feed.
Commitment
Approximately four hours per month is required to be a news editor. This time commitment is spread evenly throughout the month.
Qualifications
A familiarity with current events at TLDP is required as are good written language skills. Editors should understand how to use CVS.
Supervision
Peer feedback is obtained from TLDP's general discussion mailing list.
Training
There is no formal training for this position.
Policies Affecting Assignment
Filling of a news editor position must be agreed upon by current editor(s) and/or the TLDP webmaster(s).

Magazine features editor-
Job description
A magazine features editor ensures that their publication is full of entertaining, informative and newsworthy articles.
Most opportunities are in large publishing companies that produce a wide range of titles. However, features editors are also employed by trade magazines, specialist publishers, online media and in-house magazines.
The responsibilities of the role can include: generating ideas for features, commissioning work by freelance writers, editing and proofreading, managing writing staff and liaising with artists and photographers.
Magazine features editors do not always need specialist knowledge of the subject they cover, unless the content is highly technical, although an interest in the subject is usually expected.
Typical work activities
The role will vary according to the size of the publication and the nature of its content, but responsibilities will typically include:
overseeing the layout, appearance and content of feature articles;
generating ideas for features with writing staff;
commissioning articles from freelance and in-house writers;
managing writing staff and freelance feature writers;
editing and re-writing articles, some of which may be rejected or returned to the writer for revision;
overseeing artwork, design and photography for the features section of the magazine;
attending photo-shoots;
organising meetings with writers and artists to discuss ideas for artwork, layout and features;
negotiating payments with freelance writers;
dealing with legal matters;
selecting feature articles for each issue;
sending out briefs to writers which can include word count, deadline, fee and writing style;
proofreading all pages before going to press;
raising the profile of the magazine;
networking with others at industry events;
assisting other staff to meet their deadlines.
